We’ve Moved In: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

We’ve Moved In: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

Well, we’ve finally unloaded most the boxes we need to live with for now and are as settled as we can be in this short period of time. We are so fortunate to have such a quaint, picturesque home to live in and are enjoying so much time outside, from AM coffee on our covered patio to walking downtown on errands to PM libations on the lower patio. Joking aside, even the intense heat has been totally bearable because… it’s dry heat, folks!

So, I’ve been collecting some thoughts these last few weeks that I’d like to share with you, whether you are intending a move in the near future or not – just good, ol’ ah-ha’s for you to implement in your own lives and maybe save yourselves some trouble or gain some space and peace of mind. Here we go:

You don’t have to wait until you move to throw out that 4-alarm hot sauce in the refrigerator. I’m still sneezing from just dumping it down the drain!
Don’t inadvertently pack what you may still need access to, or at least label what’s in every single box very clearly. You will need those safe deposit box keys to close out that account – or pay dearly! Thank goodness for permanent pens and super sticky notes!
As per wonderful Don Miguel Ruiz (“The Four Agreements”), don’t make assumptions: we thought we could trailer the pickup, but turned out it was too long to so do. Would have only been able to tow the Prius, with me and two cats driving for 10 hours in a vehicle with no air conditioning. So… we sold the truck the last day in town!
Allow yourself to rely on the kindness of strangers: the buyers of our lovely home helped pack and load, can you believe that? We’ll be ever grateful, Mike and Judith!
Do NOT underestimate the size (and weight) of your stuff! From the size of the moving van to the ability to move furniture around, think about your solid oak vs buying ‘cardboard’ furniture next time. It was a bit of a surprise for us to have to rely on help to move out/move in for the first time this time around – guess we aren’t as young as we used to be, eh? Oh, yes… much of our furniture stayed with the house due to size and packing constraints. “Move-in ready,” for sure!
Have someone packing your van, if you haven’t hired this part of the process out, that knows how to pack tight! Jim’s a pro and that talent was crucial for getting as much in as we did, without having to hire another van or trailer. This also precludes any travel damage from items shifting as you drive down the highway. There was no way even a mouse could have squeezed in!
Be prepared to re-purpose in all sorts of ways during the entire moving process. You can use red Solo cups (with or without the song!) for your morning cereal for days until you find the bowls. Our little ‘travel picnic bag’ of utensils, napkins, etc. proved extremely necessary and useful.
Know that as you are running around like a crazy person that multi-tasking will become a (short-lived) norm! I can’t tell you how many times I interrupted myself with “Now, why am I in here? What was I doing?” Remember: it’s OK, as long as you get past that tendency as soon as possible. Just a complete waste of time, right?
Oh, yes… don’t forget about the disparity in the definition of “clean.” I wish I owned stock in the various wipes companies, as my hands just won’t let me ‘dip the sponge and wring’ anymore! Lots of aching muscles and ‘barked knuckles’ getting our little home just the way we wanted it, but so worth it.
So, thus ends the most recent saga of the McNetts and their move. The cats are settled, enjoying their new little ‘tower.’ We’ve made many new friends. Volunteering has already found us. We can even walk into a room now, knowing why we’re there! As I’ve shared so many times in the past, this is one of the blessings of having systems and organizing processes: with the advent of wild times in your lives, those systems and processes are what get you back on track, after the initial craziness!
