All Things Are Possible – What Could Be Impossible?

There is little, if anything, that is impossible. But if we don’t believe it is possible, it is not for us. If we believe it is possible, it is for us. It is normal to have doubts or not understand or be afraid of something that seems insurmountable, but as we start doing it, we find that it is possible and that we can accomplish it.

In the New Testament, Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believeth.” For a long time I’ve considered that statement. Is belief all it takes? What about truth? What about getting off the couch and doing something? What about innate talents and abilities, or lack of them?

Well, after thinking about it for many years, I’ve come to what I think is some understanding of the concept.

In the first place, what is possible? What is impossible? Is anything that might be worth something really impossible? I remember that when I was in elementary school, my fellow classmates said that if anything is possible, try putting the toothpaste back in the tube. Well of course that’s possible. How did it get in there in the first place? If you have the proper equipment, you can get the toothpaste in, or back in the tube. You can manufacture the toothpaste and the tube. You can do anything. The older and more knowledgeable I get–the more “sophisticated” I get, the more I believe that very little cannot be done. You might think that the older a person gets, the more jaded and realistic he becomes and realizes that a lot of things cannot be done, but it has been just the opposite for me. So I believe the first part of Jesus’s sentence: “All things are possible.”

If we don’t believe that all things are possible, that fact will do us no good. If we don’t believe we can have a loving, adult relationship, we can’t. If we don’t believe we can start a business and be successful at it, we can’t. If we don’t believe we can have a fulfilling job, we can’t. If we don’t believe that we can make enough money to be very comfortable and have a lot of fun, we can’t. If we don’t believe we can afford to buy a beautiful house, we can’t. But those who believe, can. They go on before the unbelievers, having great lives and having fun helping others.

There’s no reason to not believe. There was a time when we were children, and couldn’t ride a bike or read a book. We overcame those deficiencies in our lives. There was a time when we couldn’t afford a house, a car, or even a refrigerator. We overcame that and obtained those things. Buying and paying for a house might seem pretty daunting to a child or even a teenager. But we adults take it in stride and get it done.

Right now, some of us look at starting a business or writing a book or getting an advanced university degree as pretty daunting. But it’s the same thing as when we were four or five years old, looking at a bicycle. It’s possible. A lot of it is even pretty ho-hum. We just have to believe we can do it and go after it. Some things are easier for some people than others. Everyone has their natural proclivities. Some have to work harder at some things than others. Still, though, with enough work, almost everything is possible.

As we believe something we want to do is possible for us, we start to do it, or at least we should start to do it. Nothing is more tragic than someone within days of the end of their lives wishing they had done more of the things they wanted to do, but for some reason never did. As we do something, our belief in the thing, in the process, in the results, and in ourselves increases. As our belief increases, so does our determination and knowledge, and we do more and better. As we do more and better we believe in more things that less-informed and less-ambitious people might think to be impossible. It’s a cycle. But it doesn’t start if we just stare at it wondering if it really works. It works. Get on it and get going.

In the story in which Jesus said, “All things are possible to him that believeth,” a man had asked Jesus to heal his son, who had little control of himself. He often fell into water and almost drowned or fell into fire and almost burned to death. Jesus asked the man if he believed it were possible for his son to be healed. The man said, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” He believed, but he had doubts. He believed but he didn’t understand everything about it. He believed but he was unsure how it would happen.

It is normal to have doubts. It is normal to lack understanding or to be afraid of the future. But it is not acceptable to stay there in that state of doubt, or fear, or lack of understanding. It is not acceptable to be lazy. Anyone can have, be, or do anything they want. We just need to desire it enough to do something about it. We need to work at it. We need to believe in ourselves and in others and in the truth that if we work to get something, we will surely get it, exactly like we decided we would get a house, or a car, or a refrigerator, and we got them. In the exact same way, we can get a better job or a university degree. We can get and we can be a good spouse. We can start a business. We can write a book. We can invent something that will make us multimillionaires. We can become more educated, more wise, more healthy, and more wealthy. Just believe and get busy. All things are possible to him that believeth.
