Getting your day off on the right foot seems impossible sometimes. You have high hopes for a good day and then 10 minutes after getting to work something goes wrong. Most of the time this “event” can be the beginning of a real bad day.

What if you knew that everyone was cheering for you? What if you knew that everyone “had your back?” Would that make a difference in your perception of this early in the day bad event?

I was recently reminded of the importance of people needing to feel like others want them to succeed as opposed to others just waiting around for them to fail. The reminder came from my 4 year old daughter. When I drop my kids off at school in the morning, I always tell them… “Have a great day!” I never really thought that much about it or realized that it had any impact on their day, until one morning last week. As I was leaving early for work, my 4 year old daughter stopped me at the door looked me in the eye and said, “Have a great day daddy!” As you can imagine, I did have a great day. It has been over a week now and I am still replaying that morning in my mind. I am not sure that I have had a bad day since.

So how does this relate to you and your people? Simple. Do your employees feel like you want them to have a great day or Do they feel that you are just waiting around for them to fail? This is a tough question that you may not want to answer. Most of us don’t want to see our people fail, but we are constantly watching to make sure they aren’t doing anything wrong. Most employees feel like someone is constantly looking over their shoulder just waiting for them to make a mistake.

You want your people to succeed, don’t you? If so then they need to know it, they need to feel it, they need to see it and they need to HEAR it. You need to show them every way possible that you are hoping that they have a great day and that you are willing to do what you can to make that happen.

Think about the worst job you have ever had in your life. Are you picturing it now? Think about this for a minute, was it the work or the people that made the job bad. Most of the time it is the people. You likely felt under-appreciated, over-worked, micromanaged or all of these. So you left. Your people are having the same thoughts. That is unless you are genuinely are showing them that you want them to “Have a Great Day!”

This week find a way to put into motion the necessary pieces to make sure that your employees feel like you want them to succeed. I think that you will realize that the “extra” effort you wanted from them was just a “Great Day” away.
