Days go by and too often you don’t really appreciate your life as much as you could. In order to appreciate life much more you could have a gratitude diary. Every day make sure that you write in your diary or journal what you are grateful for and what has been good for you this day.

You could start your entry with the words ‘Today I am grateful for….’ and ‘What has been better for me today has been…’

Complete each line with as many things you can think of.

Consider all your different senses when you do this exercise. Think about what you see, what you hear what you have felt, both physically experienced through touch and been aware of emotionally, and what you have tasted as a pleasing sensation. Start with an initial appreciation of the way your body works and the amazing abilities you have to experience your environment through all your senses. If any of these are lacking due to illness then be appreciative of how the other senses make up for any lack by being even more able to detect and enjoy the world around you.

1. What you see

Begin by appreciating your sense of sight and the wonderful world around you and that you can see the beautiful colours and their tones and the way they change as the light changes.

Be grateful for any new things you have seen this day too and appreciate that you are open to seeing something new in places and things you have seen before.

2. What you hear

Your ability to hear is something to appreciate fully and then the sound of birdsong and the noise of traffic. Then there are new sounds, music, children singing, choirs and drums, whatever you have heard today which made your heart sing too.

3. What you felt with touch

Appreciate feeling of texture and surface or familiar and unfamiliar objects. Notice what you like better: smooth velvet or rough stone or coarse sand running through your fingers.

4. What you felt emotionally

Appreciate of your reaction to people, places and things and how they interact with your emotional landscape. Try to shift a negative emotions into a positive one and notice the shift that occurs when you change your posture.

5. What you tasted

Appreciate sensation of taste and how it can be enhanced with herbs and spices and different ways of preparing familiar and unfamiliar foods. Appreciate trying new recipes and adjusting the old ones to give you another sensation and be grateful for being able to taste more and better.
