In his book, New Rules of the New Economy, Kevin Kelly said that many of those things that we were used to paying for would gradually become free. This prediction was made in the late 1990s and is an accepted part of doing business today.

Years ago, I received some free seeds for flowers, and one chopstick arrived in the mail. Then it was free browsers, free software, and now free ebooks, reports, newsletters, webinars – even university classes.

There is more free content of real value on the Web today than there has ever been.

The rise in the quality of free products and services is what Joel Comm refers to as moving the free line; and by that he means that as paid for products get better, those of lesser value become free.

This phenomenon should force the mediocre out of the market, it doesn’t do so as much as it should.

How can entrepreneurs attract customers through free products and services. In other words, where does the new free begin?

The simple answer is that there should be no difference in the standard between what you give away for free and what you sell. That is, you should always do your best and offer the highest value to your customers for free. So the new free begins straightaway.

That policy will be anathema to many would-be entrepreneurs; but the most savvy will recognize that this is the best way to attract customers.

Here are three reasons why.

1. Your customers and potential customers expect nothing less.

They know that whatever you’re willing to give them for free is a reflection of the quality of what you have to sell. If you attempt to pass off lower quality products just to get their name on a mailing list, they’ll recognize this market tactic as soon as they are familiar with the offer.

2. It will set you apart from your competition.

Far too many businesses are afraid to give away anything that has real value. Instead, they prefer to give away only that which has high value to their customers or potential customers. Sometimes, that works. But, most of the time, it’s seen as the cheap trick that it is.

3. It will pressure you to improve all that you do.

Sometimes it’s all to easy to become complacent. When our products or services are selling well, there’s the temptation to just let everything cruise along. But, if you are regularly making older products free, then you will have to continually make everything better.
