Are your beliefs illusions that delude you?

Can you remember something in the past that you thought was absolutely true, only to find out later that it wasn’t? You really believed it, you thought you were right, you were so convinced, but then one day you had a change of heart. Perhaps you gained some different information and with that you realized that you had it wrong, or what you believed was only partly true. The elephant; I am sure most people would have heard the parable of the six blind men describing what an elephant is like. The story originated in India and it has been widely told ever since. It illustrates the point that we often believe certain things to be true, only to discover we see only part of the reality and therefore our beliefs are often not only an illusion, but they can also seriously delude us. Just in case you haven’t heard this powerful story, or would like to be reminded, or just want to read it again, it goes like this.

Once upon a time, there lived six blind men in a village. One day the villagers told them, “Hey, there is an elephant in the village today”. They had no idea what an elephant was. They decided, “Even though we would not be able to see it, we can go and feel it anyway”. All of them went to the elephant and touched it. “Hey, the elephant is a pillar,” said the first man who touched his leg. “Oh, no! It is like a rope,” said the second man who touched the tail. “Oh, no! It is like a thick branch of a tree,” said the third man who touched the trunk of the elephant. “It is like a big hand fan,” said the fourth man who touched the ear of the elephant. “It is like a huge wall,” said the fifth man who touched the belly of the elephant. “It is like a solid pipe,” said the sixth man who touched the tusk of the elephant. They began to argue about the elephant and what it was like and all six men insisted they were right. They were getting agitated. A wise man was passing by and saw the men arguing. He stopped and asked them, “What is the matter?” They said, “We cannot agree on what the elephant is like”. Each one of them told the wise man what he thought the elephant was like. The wise man calmly explained to them, “All of you are right. The reason every one of you is telling it differently is because each one of you touched a different part of the elephant. So, actually the elephant has all the features you all described”. The six blind men immediately stopped fighting and broke out in laughter and realized how silly they had been.

This powerful parable can be interpreted in various ways. The first and important moral of the story is; if we realize that everyone might hold a piece of ‘the elephant’ (the ‘truth’) it allows us to be more tolerant of those who think differently from us and in turn perhaps learn from them. Second, what you believe about yourself or how you see and interpret the world might not be the way things actually are in reality. You adopt your beliefs through your experiences and the interpretation of these experiences, the same way each of the blind men interpreted the elephant but none of them had the whole picture. You would be deluded if you thought that an elephant is a pillar or a rope, or a big hand fan. Just imagine how inaccurate this belief would be and how it would limit your perception of the elephant. You are most likely a blind man What is really interesting is that whatever you might think of the story, it is most likely that you are also like a blind man (or blind woman), and that your beliefs, your perceptions and your interpretations about yourself are very limiting and hold you back from living your full potential and perhaps blocking you from becoming successful, prosperous and fulfilled. In what way do your beliefs delude you? What is worrying is that most people never question their beliefs especially when it comes to the beliefs they hold about themselves; their abilities, capabilities and potential. It is important to know which beliefs you hold that hinder you and which ones support your dreams, goals and aspirations. How would you know? Here is a clue; look at your life and look at the results you are experiencing as a consequence of your behavior, beliefs and your actions. Remember, nearly all behavior and actions flow forth from your beliefs, so your beliefs will determine your future success and shape your life. Make sure your beliefs are ones that shape your life the way you want it to look. Do something about challenging your beliefs especially in the areas that you are unhappy with in your life and watch your life change for the better.

Numerous studies have shown that people who set goals consistently achieve more in life than those who do not. Yet there is so much more to goal setting than most people think. Not only do people need to be clear about what they want, they need to create an environment for success and achievement; an environment that guides and supports them, keeps them focused and on the right track.
