Staying In The Moment – Or Not

I firmly believe that the present could be controlled, if you could find some way to recognize when it actually happens. How long does it take before the future becomes the past? Traditionally, we like to look at time in terms of years, months, days, minutes, or seconds. Our minds are fine with those relatively large increments of time, because we can locate and latch on to a truly discernible present. The problem arises from if there are increments of time much smaller than a second. With those small increments, how do you know when you are in between the past and future?
The process of catching a football would require you to be in the moment (the present), probably, a million or maybe a billion times. During that moment or moments, you would have to be concerned about the past, present and future numerous times to keep alive the continuity of the catch. The whole arrangement is similar to a dollar sign shape. The S shape would be representative of your path through time. The vertical line going down the middle of the S shape would be the present and or either side of it, transfixed to the left or right, would be the past and the future. If they were towns, you would be coming out of The Past, into The Present (The Moment), and before you knew it you would be in The Future. However, you would be thrust into The Present shortly before being relegated back to The Past. You would go through these towns so quickly that you wouldn’t have time to get to know what the weather is like, what the people are like, or if they have decent schools. You would be in and out and would have no time to look for or buy a house there. How could a person live in either town or be in the moment (the present)?
The present seems to be a lot like the existence of nothing. Once you look for and discover nothing it becomes something before you know it and, therefore, is disqualified from being in the state of nothingness. The present is not impossible to live in; we do it every day. The difficult part is to recognize when it is occurring.
To make things less complicated, I follow the coach’s advice and live in that imagined moment, the so-called present. It can be adjusted to fit whatever circumstance that is needed to be successful. I will continue to label the present as a time period that is manageable. A period that allows the cognitive completion of steps needed to complete the entire process. Logically, I know this not technically correct, but the resulting order in my routine has proven to be beneficial. I can live in the moment as long as I have the ability to define it.
