Tomatoes are easy to grow making them very popular with home gardeners. They are a sturdy crop and can withstand fluctuations in weather conditions but when prolonged summer heat hits, it not only stresses people and power grids, it also causes problems for your tomato plants. If you plan ahead and follow these important tips, you and your tomato plants can weather the next heat wave without wilting in the sun.

Tomatoes thrive in warm, sunny weather but even the strongest tomato plant can be stressed if the temperature hovers above 90 degrees for too long. Several tomato plant problems become much more common in hot weather including blossom end rot, splitting, cracking and spider mites.

Blossom end rot begins as a light-colored area on the blossom end of the fruit which grows and darkens as the tomato ripens. Chemically, blossom end rot is caused by a lack of calcium which enters the plant with water through the roots. If the roots are dry, water and calcium can’t enter the plant.

Splitting and cracking develop in the skin of the tomato, usually after the tomato has grown to full size and is nearly ripe. It is caused by a sudden surge in growth and then a sudden lack of moisture. A prolonged moist period, perhaps from a stretch of rainy weather or excessive watering, will cause the plant and tomatoes to grow rapidly. When a heat wave hits and that abundant moisture is no longer available, the tomatoes develop cracks.

Spider mites love tomato plants and heat. They attack the plant leaves resulting in a random yellow, web-like pattern on the leaves. A garden dust will usually control them. A steady supply of moisture will usually keep them away.

The common denominator to these problems is lack of available moisture.

So how much water does a tomato plant need? A mature tomato plant requires at least one inch of water per week. That translates into about three to five gallons per plant. This is a total amount which should include water you provide AND any rain Mother Nature supplies. A simple rain gauge from your local garden supply store can help you measure both of these amounts.

The best way to give the plants your share of the water is a slow, steady application to the roots at least once per week. Drip irrigation directly to the soil using a soaker hose is ideal. Pouring a 5 gallon bucket of water at the base of each plant is not recommended. Maintaining a layer of at least 4 inches of mulch at the base of the plant will help retain the moisture in the soil and prevent the tomato plant roots from drying out.

In very hot weather, when the temperature regularly reaches above 95 degrees, especially if the humidity is low, the plant will need more water. Watering every 3 to 4 days is a good idea instead of just once per week. The objective is to keep a regular supply of moisture in the soil to a depth of at least 6 to 8 inches. The soil should be moist but not wet. Avoid overwatering. It will not do your tomato plants any good. Soil moisture meters are available from your local garden supply store to assist you with this. A metal probe is inserted into the soil and the meter will tell you how wet or dry the soil is.

It is also important to remember that the best time to water is early in the morning. If you water during the day, the summer sun will evaporate a lot of the water you apply. If you water later in the evening, the tomato plants will be wet overnight, greatly increasing the chance of fungus to develop.

Providing enough water to the part of your tomato plants underground will help the part of the plant above the ground survive the worst of summer heat.

In his book, New Rules of the New Economy, Kevin Kelly said that many of those things that we were used to paying for would gradually become free. This prediction was made in the late 1990s and is an accepted part of doing business today.

Years ago, I received some free seeds for flowers, and one chopstick arrived in the mail. Then it was free browsers, free software, and now free ebooks, reports, newsletters, webinars – even university classes.

There is more free content of real value on the Web today than there has ever been.

The rise in the quality of free products and services is what Joel Comm refers to as moving the free line; and by that he means that as paid for products get better, those of lesser value become free.

This phenomenon should force the mediocre out of the market, it doesn’t do so as much as it should.

How can entrepreneurs attract customers through free products and services. In other words, where does the new free begin?

The simple answer is that there should be no difference in the standard between what you give away for free and what you sell. That is, you should always do your best and offer the highest value to your customers for free. So the new free begins straightaway.

That policy will be anathema to many would-be entrepreneurs; but the most savvy will recognize that this is the best way to attract customers.

Here are three reasons why.

1. Your customers and potential customers expect nothing less.

They know that whatever you’re willing to give them for free is a reflection of the quality of what you have to sell. If you attempt to pass off lower quality products just to get their name on a mailing list, they’ll recognize this market tactic as soon as they are familiar with the offer.

2. It will set you apart from your competition.

Far too many businesses are afraid to give away anything that has real value. Instead, they prefer to give away only that which has high value to their customers or potential customers. Sometimes, that works. But, most of the time, it’s seen as the cheap trick that it is.

3. It will pressure you to improve all that you do.

Sometimes it’s all to easy to become complacent. When our products or services are selling well, there’s the temptation to just let everything cruise along. But, if you are regularly making older products free, then you will have to continually make everything better.

Staying Positive During Life Transitions

No matter who you are, or what your work situation is, when you’re in the middle of a transition it’s always unsettling–leading you to freeze up, and become frozen in inactivity and inertia. What makes you tense is your focus on the future. You fear what won’t happen that you want to have happen, or you fear what will happen that you don’t want to happen. When you feel overwhelmed and stuck in ‘future tense’, it’s time to stop, take a breath, and ease back into the present. Get off the worry track. Take a day off from thinking about ‘your situation’.

‘The best way to live is to be, simply be.’ Yogi Bhajan

Unsettling Times of Transition

Are you finding it difficult to stay positive in today’s crazy world of work?

Sure, the economy is slowly recovering, but it still has its ups and downs. You may find yourself in the middle of either making a transition or thinking about making a transition in your career.

But with uncertainty about the future, you may be left feeling lethargic, unsettled, and unmotivated to take the next step.

Perhaps you’re:

Unemployed and still without a job after months of searching;
Employed, but in a job you hate and feel compelled to keep, even though you fear you may be next on the chopping block;
An independent business owner whose business is failing in the current economy, but you lack the energy to develop a new business plan.
A recent college graduate worried about finding the right job to launch your career.

Change from Future Tense to Present Ease

No matter who you are, or what your work situation is, when you’re in the middle of a transition it’s always unsettling–leading you to freeze up, and become frozen in inactivity and inertia.

What makes you tense is your focus on the future. You fear what won’t happen that you want to have happen, or you fear what will happen that you don’t want to happen.

When you feel overwhelmed and stuck in ‘future tense’, it’s time to stop, take a breath, and ease back into the present. Get off the worry track. Take a day off from thinking about ‘your situation’, and engage in activities that let you know you are glad to be alive.

Be–Just Be

Tough times require, well, sometimes, sitting back, doing nothing, and thinking about something else.

Sometimes we just need to stop to remember–life is to be enjoyed. Instead of letting your life be determined by fear and worry, focus on putting memorable activities into your life each day.

To stay positive during times of transition, find a way to do something of great personal importance each day so you can ‘write on your heart that every day is the best day of the year’.

What Gives Your Life Meaning?

What is one activity of great personal importance you could engage in today that would let you write on your heart ‘today is the best day of the year’?

Don’t think about it–do it.

‘And we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once.’ Friedrich Nietzsche

What Dancing With the Stars Can Teach You About Business

Donald Driver, wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, won this year’s Dancing With the Stars. Now Donald is a great guy and probably worth having an article devoted to him, but that’s not why I’m doing it. Why I’m doing it is because the same strengths Donald brought to his career with the Packers is what ultimately was responsible for him winning Dancing with the Stars. Keep reading for 3 of them.

What Dancing With the Stars Can Teach You About Business

In case dancing isn’t your thing, Donald Driver, wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, won this year’s Dancing With the Stars.

Even if you’re not a Green Bay Packers fan, there are a lot of reasons to root for Donald. He’s the classic rags-to-riches story: Dad in jail when he was born, family was homeless during much of his childhood. He was a seventh round draft pick of the Packers and ended up becoming one of the most productive receivers in Packer history. (Plus he’s just an all-around really nice guy.)

But even though Donald is probably worth having an article devoted to him, that’s not why I’m doing it. Why I’m doing it is because the same strengths Donald brought to his career with the Packers is what ultimately was responsible for him winning Dancing with the Stars.

(Something for you to ponder: What strengths caused you to be successful in some other aspect of your life that you can draw upon for your business?)

What’s even more interesting is some of these strengths would also translate to the business world. Here are 3 of them:

1. Desire to win. By all accounts Donald is a really great, really nice guy. The first thing he did when he landed his first big contract with the Packers is buy his grandma a house and tell her she would never have to worry about money the rest of her life. He set up a foundation. He’s heavily involved in the Wisconsin community and volunteers his time as well as donating money for charity. He’s written 3 children’s books. His teammates love him.

But make no mistake — the man is a fierce competitor. That was on display front and center the entire dance competition. He was bound and determined to win and by God that was exactly what he did.

He wasn’t the best dancer — that was Katherine, the Welch Opera singer. If anything he was probably the most improved by the end of the season. But he was the most driven to win and if you could ever see someone will themselves to win something, this was it.

2. Know your strengths and assets and capitalize on them. Donald knew going in he had one GIANT asset — Green Bay Packer fans. You see, fan voting counts for half of his score. And he knew how loyal Packer fans are, and with no football to watch they would be watching (and voting) for him on Dancing With the Stars.

And speaking of fan voting…

3. Ask for the sale. Of all the dancers, Donald was the ONLY one who would mug for the camera, mouthing about he wanted their vote and making a phone gesture with his hand. It was really cute and very inoffensive how he did it (so yes it IS possible to ask for the sale in an inoffensive and cute way) but the point was made. Vote for Donald.

The other couples would simply stand there and smile for the camera. Donald actively asked for the vote over and over. And it was even bigger than that — he tweeted about it, he put it all over his website. He worked and worked that asset, and I suspect his efforts also got him some votes from non-Packer fans.

And it was a good thing he did this — according to people who watch the show more than me, this was the most competitive Dancing with the Stars ever. The 3 couples were virtually tied with the judges’ votes. It was up to the fans to make the decision.

And the one they voted for was the one who asked for it.
