I was listening in on a sales team conversation. They were setting very low expectations for the month of March. Here in Victoria we have three four day weeks out of four and a lot of people seem to be on holidays. This got me thinking about the results this team were setting themselves up for.

Welcome to Monday

I was listening in on a sales team conversation. They were setting very low expectations for the month of March. Here in Victoria we have three four day weeks out of four and a lot of people seem to be on holidays.

This got me thinking about the results this team were setting themselves up for.

Sun Tzu, Buddha, Jesus, Henry Ford, Greek philosophers and many others all recognise one important human characteristic. “If you think you can do a thing, or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right”

Mental Blocks

I learned to swim on holidays at the beach while growing up in Korea. As a part of the swimming program I was required to do a series of dives. While attempting to do a backwards dive I hurt myself. In retrospect it was probably not a serious injury, however, it placed a mental block in my brain. Even today, almost 50 years later, there is no way I can do a backward dive without this incident rushing into my mind and creating fear.

While the ability to do a backwards dive is not so important, my brain continues to put up blocks for other more important activities. In fact, psychologists tell us the brain is very good at finding and remembering reasons not to do something.

Deliberate plans are required to overcome the blocks our brain puts in place.

Setting Priorities

Early in my sales career I was competing for a major ERP systems implementation and software development job.

We had moved from a long list to a short list to being one of two organisations being considered. The decision date was looming and it was obvious we were in position two – not a nice place to be with the decision being made on Friday! We knew we were not the ideal fit, however, we had proposed some innovative modifications they liked.

Gerry and I decided to make one last pitch. We got in front of the decision maker and did everything we could to budge him! His mind was made up. He was ready to sign with our competitor.

I knew the sales person from the winning company very well. I called up Bill to congratulate him. You could feel the excitement coming over the telephone line.

“Are you going to get the contracts signed today?” I asked.

“No,” he said, “I have made an appointment for Tuesday morning so I can get away for the long weekend”.

Those words came back to me like when I read the business section of the paper on Tuesday morning. Over the weekend a Japanese company had put in a takeover bid which the board were likely to accept. The First Law of Professional Selling “When there is a deal to be closed stop all other activities to finalise the deal”

It never ceases to amaze me so many people just do not get it. When a deal or opportunity is there to be closed do not hesitate – close it!

If Bill had gone out that day he would have had a signed contract, a fat commission check and his company would have a big deal. He had ignored the first law of a professional sales person and lost.

What you accomplish this week is up to you. There may be some things which are genuinely out of your control. If you do not think it is possible, however, you probably will not ask, and if you don’t ask the opportunity might just go away.

Today’s question and actions

The moment you give up is the moment you let someone else win. If you’re in business or sales the very first question you must ask each morning is’What deals or opportunities are there that can or need to be closed today?’

Extend this to everything you do by asking the question ‘Is this activity going to help me achieve my goals today, this week, or this month?’

The answer to these questions will help determine the priority of all other activities for the day.

In most areas of the United States, spring is one of the best times of the year to catch trout. This is the time of the year when thousands of trout are stocked, water temperatures are perfect, and in many other ways is a great time for trout fisherman. Although spring trout tend to be easier to catch than usual, there are some helpful tips that you can use to insure success.

One of the most important decisions for trout fisherman this time of the year is where to fish. Find a list of managed trout waters (most states will have this online), and find a stream near your home. Also, many states post stocking schedules for these streams, and if your state provides that, it will help you choose a stream where trout numbers are good. If you can’t find a stocking schedule, your next best bet will be to head to your local fly or tackle shop. If you by a couple lures or flies, the shop owner will always be happy to tell you of a few streams that will produce good trout fishing. They will also tell you what lures, flies, and bait are taking the most fish.

If you are fishing a stream with predominately stocked trout, the fishing will rarely be difficult. Simply pick an inviting spot, maybe a plunge pool at the bottom of a water fall or where a riffle dumps into a pool. Then begin drifting some type of of live bait under a small bobber. Nightcrawlers, red worms, Powerbait, and salmon eggs, and various other prepared baits will all be successful in this situation. Fly fisherman will do well with Woolly Buggers, San Juan Worms, and Egg Pattern. One thing to remember when you are fishing for freshly stocked trout is that you do not want to try to think like a fish. Rather, you want to think like the guy who drives the hatchery truck. Any area where a truck could be backed up to the river is likely to be a hotspot. Formal access points will be heavily stocked. While you should try to wade quietly, it probably won’t matter too much. Freshly stocked trout have not yet learned to associate humans with trouble.With all that said, a few weeks to a few months after stocking, the fish that are still around will begin to learn how to survive in a stream. That will likely mean they will move away from heavily fished areas, to places they are more likely to be able to hold over.

Fishing for wild trout in the spring time is an altogether different pursuit. Instead of looking for areas where there is easy road access like you would on a stocked stream, you are looking for exactly the opposite. Generally, the further you get from the roads and the people, the better the fishing. You will also want to use different techniques. Spin fisherman will do best with small spinners and spoons, generally no larger than 1/16 ounce. Fly fisherman will do well with various dry flies (depending on the presence of a hatch), and small nymphs. Unlike with stocked trout, you will need to wade quietly and keep a low profile. Wild trout understand that humans are predators, just like otters, kingfishers, and eagles. For that reason, they will often flee to cover if they get a good look at you.

Finding clear water is sometime difficult during the spring. In some areas, muddy water is caused by snowmelt, and in other areas it is caused by heavy rains. In any case, your best bet will usually be to move upstream. While large rivers can look like chocolate milk, small feeder streams and headwater creeks may still be quite clear and fishable. These smaller streams don’t usually hold as large of trout as the rivers they flow in to, but fishing them is much better than staring at a muddy river. Streams located below dams, also known as tailwaters, also generally stay clear when other rivers are muddy. Spring creeks are another option.

April Fools’ Day, April 1st, could begin quite blissfully. The April Fools’ jokes will mostly be taken with a light heart and an open mind, so plan your best! The rest of the week should be uneventful with nothing but lunar events in the sky. We may find we get some extra work done and even come up with new ideas to make our work easier.

The weekend of April 5th could bring a little Spring romance, and others may decide to spoil themselves with Venus and Mars joining forces behind the Sun. Our creative energies will be strong, and there could be some special magic in the air. Our intuitions should also be strong, and psychic readings will be accurate.

Those of us in the Western hemisphere will be beginning the week of April 8th under a void of course Moon, so it could be a “Blue Monday.” But, it won’t last long. Our energy and our drive will return by afternoon, and we may be ready to start something new. The Aries New Moon will occur early Wednesday. I usually encourage my readers to write their wish lists on the New Moon, but the Aries Moon wants action – not thoughts. Is there a new project you’ve been thinking about (like maybe painting the bathroom or changing your hair color)? This will be the time to begin. Projects initiated at this time will have a strong chance of success.

We could be feeling restricted and uptight as the weekend of April 12th begins. In fact, we may have found those feelings gradually increasing as the week progressed. Pluto will be turning retrograde, so be very, very gentle with your Scorpio friends. Saturn and Uranus will also be out of phase, and that could impede our progress. But, most of the confusion and tension should have lifted by Sunday, April 14th, and we will be ready for fun, friends, and travel.

The week of April 15th should begin on a lively note with the Moon dancing naked in Gemini. We may want to call it a “Pink Monday!” And, the week will continue to get better. Mars will be exactly aligned behind the Sun by midweek, and that could shine the limelight on our careers. Our energy will be high, and as long as we can navigate the office politics, we may get noticed. Venus and Neptune will begin dancing as the Sun passes Mars, making miracles a good possibility on Wednesday and Thursday, April 17th and 18th.

We may hit a few bumps in the road throughout the weekend of April 19th, with Mercury taking pot shots at Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto. Think, think, think before you speak this weekend, or foot in mouth disorder could overtake you. Even worse, you could say something to cause the permanent loss of a friend or loved one. Also use caution driving, and travel delays are possible.

We may awaken on Earth Day, Monday, April 22nd, feeling kind of burned out. Stick to routine chores and maybe even a little aggressive housework to shake off those heavy feelings. The week will be improving quickly, possibly as soon as Monday night. Many of the planets will be dancing and singing this week, but smack-dab in the middle of it all, we have a Full Moon Lunar Eclipse. People could get very excited this week, and some may have poor judgment. If you are tempted to cheat or lie this week, think twice, think three times. It is very likely you will get caught. If we can stay focused on “the straight and narrow” this week, we may actually find we accomplish some of our goals.

The weekend of April 26th will begin on a very romantic and creative note, but by Saturday, Mars and the Sun will begin a battle with Saturn. This battle will continue through the end of the month. Its is quite probable that a large amount of work will demand our attention, but we may find ourselves unable to act. Our energy will come in spurts, if it comes at all. If you got busy earlier this month and got ahead at work, take a few days off. The last few days of April would be great for any kind of constructive work on the recliner or the sofa.

We have two more eclipses coming in May, and Pluto and Uranus will be lining up for another turbulent battle. There will be changes coming in May, and some could be disastrous. Check back next month to find out more.

Technique and Equipment

Compared to other types of photography, street photography does not rely so heavily on the general rules of photography or the quality of the equipment you use. It is based more on the feeling it creates, the symbols it expresses. The best street photographs are usually the most unusual ones, with different angles and positions, that break the traditional rules. One could theoretically do this type of photography with good point and shoot cameras, but the best results are usually achieved with small SLR cameras or rangefinder cameras.

Although usually the fixed focal lenses yield the best results, it is preferably to have a zoom telephoto lens, but a fast one, that can reach distant scenes and snap quick pictures. The street photographer has to be able to move quickly and stealthy, to be able to adapt to any situation encountered on the street.

Seizing the Magic of the Moment

In street photography, the hardest thing to do is find the magic in every and any scene, seeing what no other can see, beyond the usual and mundane things and action of a day. There is a good photograph in any place and moment, but it takes a great photographer to see it and transform it into magic.
