Seven Tips To Telling Better Jokes (From a Comedian Who Really Knows!)

Everybody should be able to tell a joke well. In this article corporate comedian Brad Montgomery gives you 7 essential tips that every joke teller should know.

Seven Tips To Telling Better Jokes (From a Comedian Who Really Knows!)

To be honest, I think that most presenters should avoid telling
jokes. But on the other hand, telling jokes around the
water cooler or on the porch while sippin’ lemonade is
a time-honored tradition. If it was good enough for
Gramps, why ain’t it good enough for us? But if you
are going to tell jokes, you should do it right.

1. Make sure you actually know the joke. Practice
it! Tell it to your kids, your spouse, and your dog.
Trust me, you want to tell the joke a few times
before you do it for real. Nothing will make you
look like a bigger idiot than telling a joke wrong.

2. Scan the internet for jokes to AVOID. Don’t
tell jokes that everybody has heard… if your
joke is all over the internet, then this is a great
joke to AVOID.

3. Shorter jokes are better. I know, I know. You think
you’re a great story teller. But trust me, your audience
will appreciate you for NOT adding all of the colorful
details and fluff. Just tell the joke. Shorten it if you can.

4. The punch line comes last. And I mean last!
Nothing should come after the punch-line. Consider
this joke done well.
Why Did the chicken cross the road? To get to the
other side.

Now, the same joke when the punch-line is not last.
This is much worse. (I know, that joke is pretty bad on
it’s own, but… you get the idea.)

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other
side of the road which was on a long block because he
wanted to get to his chicken coop.

See? Punch-lines should be last. Period. NOTHING
comes after the punch. (Except for your silence and their laughter.)

5. Keep it clean. And I mean crystal clean. If you wouldn’t
tell it to the Queen of England (who probably doesn’t like
jokes much anyway) then leave it out. Seriously. If you
have any doubt whether you are “crossing the line,” then
don’t tell it. Think of it this way: if you tell a joke to 10 people
and 9 of them laugh, then you’ve still alienated a friend. Don’t do it.

6. If you are telling a joke as part of a presentation,
don’t take credit for the joke. You can do that before
the joke with something like, “Here’s one I read on
the internet.” Or after the joke with something like,
“That old joke was on the internet, but it reminds us
to…. (follow with a point.)” If you don’t let people know
that his joke is from the internet, you risk looking like a
fool. I guarantee that at least a couple of people in every
audience already know your joke, and if you want to earn
and keep THEIR respect you need to make sure you don’t (tacitly) claim that joke to be yours.

7. Don’t steal jokes from stand up comics. Unless they are
dead. Jokes are material, and it is how they earn a living.
If you tell it, copy it, email it…. whatever… you devalue the
joke for them. Besides, it’s bad karma. 🙂

Celebrating You- The Leading Lady of Your Show

You are the Leading Lady and director of your own show. You are in charge and fully responsible for how your show turns out to be. If your show is competing for the Academy of Life Award, which categories will it be nominated? Which awards will you win?
Celebrating You – The Leading Lady of Your Show
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Hueina_Su]Hueina Su

Most people think about Valentine’s Day, when they think about the month of February. It’s important to celebrate your loved ones, and love in general. However, while you are busy planning a special evening with your special someone, I would like to remind you to celebrate YOU — the most important (but often neglected) person in YOUR life.

Whenever I asked the question “Who is the most important person in your life?” My clients and workshop participants always answered “my husband/wife, my kids, my parents”, etc.

NOT ONCE has someone answered “Me” or “Myself”.

NOT ONCE.

I often joked that “If your answer is anyone but yourself, then you need to come see me ASAP!”

Think about it: What would your life be without YOU? What would your loved ones’ life be, without a healthy, happy and vibrant YOU?

When my clients said to me “But the show must go on”, I asked “Whose show are you talking about?” I told them, “You may not realize this, but YOU are the Leading Lady of your show, the show that’s Your Life”.

Every single one of us is the Leading Lady (or Man) of our own life.

Now, let me make myself clear. This is NOT about being ego-maniac or narcissistic. It’s about self love, the greatest love of all. (Remember that Whitney Houston song? Now that I mentioned it, I bet you can’t get that song out of your head now, can ya?)

“But, …”

I know, there’s a big BUT coming up right at this moment… You probably have convincing reasons why you are not the most important person in your life, and why you cannot afford to put your self-care as top priority.

As a professional life coach, keynote speaker and mother of two, over the years I’ve heard many, many legitimate reasons as well as excuses (and the limiting beliefs behind them), from my clients, audiences, students, friends, and my own family. I have experienced many similar challenges myself, in my previous roles as a nurse, counselor, full-time stay-at-home mom, full-time working mom, small business owner, etc. Believe me, I know. It’s not easy.

It’s especially hard when you have some limiting beliefs around the issue of self love, self esteem and self-care. You know the limiting beliefs I’m talking about — “I can’t afford it”, “I’m not worthy enough”, “I don’t deserve it”, “I must take care of everyone else first (or else)”, “If I say no, people won’t love/like me any more”, etc. etc. etc.

Does it ring a bell?

These limiting beliefs took years to form, and it will take some time and some hard work to overcome them. But, it’s not impossible. When you can break free from these limiting beliefs, you will finally be free to be your authentic self, and free to create the life you truly desire. If you need some coaching around these issues, I’ll be happy to help you.

Even when you feel like you are “chained” to your limiting beliefs, you can still make a conscious choice, right now, to love and accept yourself, and to treat yourself with respect and some much needed TLC.

Remember, you are the Leading Lady and director of your own show. You are in charge and fully responsible for how your show turns out to be. If your show is competing for the Academy of Life Award, which categories will it be nominated? Which awards will you win?

This Valentine’s Day, make a point to celebrate YOU, honor yourself, and give yourself the LOVE and star treatment you truly deserve.

Some Strategies To Have A Great Relationship
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Daniel_Leonhardt]Daniel Leonhardt

So many long for their relationship to be a source of strength and warmth. Since joy and happiness is wanted be all, all look for that lasting marriage. Or maybe it’s just that some people learn secrets of success from their grandparents or other relatives or friends. And since the latter is probably more accurate, here are some tried and true tips from people who have enjoyed long, happy relationships.

Creating Intimacy: using time together to make a great understanding with each other. Each couple needs time to grow close by expressing their deepest thoughts. Two people are intimate when they are able to share with each other the innermost and most essential parts of themselves without any kind of inhibition. We all want to be loved and cared for, and by doing this for each other it creates a place of peace for each to dwell.

Giving each person their space to grow: Every person needs the room to be themselves. Loving the other person means that we trust them and don’t pry. People need time alone and time with their mates and other friends. Everyone will need the room to have their own ideas and opinions.

Forgiveness: The best thing you can do in a relationship is to always find ways to forgive and find a middle ground. Actively forget sometimes. Be the first to apologize and make up. Start right now!

Do not forget that the rel=nofollow [http://greatestlovequotes.com/]love quotes we all read ought to be an inspiration rather than a indictment. Most people all need a relationship that lasts similar to we learn about in the quotes about love. Nevertheless that marriage is one that is procured and not simply handed to any of us.

Caring: Creating intimacy also involves regular expression of caring and tenderness so that each one in the relationship may know how important he or she is to the other. Caring for our mate can be so rewarding if they are good at showing their appreciation. Be careful to always show your appreciation and they will learn to do the same.

Learning to be open: if a marriage is not open in that they member communicates, the marriage will be cold. Each person must learn to open up and be honest with each other.

Truthfulness: Saying and doing what is truthful and honest for both of them would help a lot, and acceptance of each other’s personality and characteristics would foster an understanding between the two of them like no other.

Growing out of your past: How we treat our spouse is a direct reflection of what happened in our past and the lessons we learned from it. This is essential, too, in understanding the behavior of each other in connection with the atmosphere he or she grew up in.

People’s inability to create intimacy in any kind of relationship creates distance, the worm capable of eating the union slowly away. Yet it is crucial that each person in the marriage actively seek to make their marriage one that is inviting for the other person to be in.

Today is the day to jump in and start working on your relationship. The highest gift you can give yourself is the gift of a great relationship. If you two are walking hand in hand, life can be so sweet.

We are undoubtedly enthusiastic about marriage and making a love which will survive a lifetime. Behavioral Interview Basics

Behavioral Interview Basics
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Krista_Mitchell]Krista Mitchell

Behavioral interviewing is a relatively new interviewing method. It is designed to predict how you will behave in the future based on how you have handled situations in the past. The questions are not traditional interview questions that directly ask about your knowledge and experience. Traditional questions may be mixed with behavioral questions, but you must be prepared for behavioral questions with examples of how you have used your skills in the past and how organizations for which you have worked benefited from your expertise.

An example of a behavioral interview question is, “Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your supervisor and how you dealt with that.” Interviewers are not looking for hypothetical answers such as, “If I were to disagree with my supervisor, I would…” They want actual examples from your previous employment, educational experiences, or if necessary personal life experiences. Do not use examples that resulted in negative outcomes for your company. It is acceptable to use an example that is totally unrelated to the position responsibilities you are seeking, particularly if you cannot come up with anything relevant to the position that had a positive outcome. You may also use an example from your general personal life if you have no relevant work or educational experience.

In response to behavioral questions, you need to do three things:

Set up the situation
Tell what action you took
Tell what the (positive) results of your actions were

For example, in response to the above question about disagreeing with a supervisor, an example would be,

The situation: “My supervisor implemented a policy disallowing employee fraternization outside of the workplace. I disagreed because I felt that voluntary employee gatherings boosted morale and group cohesiveness.”

Your action: “I discussed this with my supervisor privately, stating why I disagreed.”

The result: “My supervisor agreed that such outside events increased morale in some employees but felt that employees who did not participate felt left out and as outsiders in the group. I suggested the idea of periodic special events within the workplace, and my supervisor decided to think about it and other ways to boost employee morale.”

Behavioral questions are focused around several competencies that employers are evaluating, which may include:

Leadership
Analytic or Critical Thinking
Communication
Problem Solving
Goal Achievement
Organizational Skills
Teamwork
Conflict
Special Job-Related Competencies

The example question above falls mainly into the Communication and Conflict skills categories and also possibly the Problem Solving category. Your interview may not have questions that cover all of these areas. Yours may only cover areas most relevant to the responsibilities of the position. How does one prepare for a behavioral interview when you don’t know what will be asked? Think about the above competency areas that are most relevant to the position for which you are interviewing. Prepare situations from the past that fall into each of those areas and that will present you in a positive light. Examples of other behavioral interview questions covering other areas are:

Tell me about a time when you set a goal and how you were able to achieve it. (Goal Achievement)
How have you used organizational skills to prioritize a lot of tasks that must be completed in a short period of time? (Organizational)
How have you handled stress in the workplace? (Problem Solving/Conflict)
How have you adapted to organizational change or a change in your responsibilities? (Teamwork/Organizational Skills)
What type of management style have you found to be most effective and why? (Leadership)
Describe a tough problem with which you have had to deal? (Problem Solving)
Tell me about a project for which you have been responsible and how you organized the necessary paperwork, tasks, goals, etc. (Analytical/Critical Thinking)
