Behold the Power of the Tip

You are an expert. You have lots of content – even more than you deliver from the presentation platform or in your consulting engagements. But how do you package that content for the web, without giving away the store?
One of the most effective methods for delivering your content is in small chunks. In a speech you do this with quotes, tips to remember, and short items. In print you write a how-to article with the 5 tips. Or you create a booklet of tips.
Online you do the same thing. You create a series of tips. Tips can be delivered online in a variety of ways. The most obvious is a tip of the week or tip of the day. With this technique you merely change the web page as often as you’ve promised a new tip. But this can be very time-consuming, especially if you decide that a daily tip is appropriate for your audience.
How do you decide how often to change the tip? Determine how often you want your online visitor to visit your website and publicize new tips for that time frame. So if you want them to come back daily for a new tip, then plan to change it daily.
A trend to watch…increasingly experts are relying on their email newsletters to deliver tips to their audience, rather than trying to encourage people to visit their site regularly. Unless you change a lot of content regularly, there really is no reason for them to visit. You’re better off delivering your content *to* the audience rather than waiting for the audience to come to you!
If you want them to visit daily you need to invest in an automatic method for updating your tips. Generally this will be a cgi (common gateway interface – it’s a “techie” term you don’t need to remember) or a web application that will automatically post a new tip daily. You’ll need a technical person to do this one for you, so plan to pay for that expertise to set this up. Once it’s set up, you can easily enter the tips and keep them updated.
As an alternative to a daily tip, you could provide a tip that changes each time someone visits the page. This may be more effective if you want to keep someone on your site. And it shows them a lot of content in a short period of time. Again, you’ll use a cgi for this. Generally you can use the same one as you did for a daily tip – just set it to change each time the web page is loaded.
Yet another alternative is an animated gif. This is a series of graphics with tips on them. They are put into a simple animation program so that they change from one graphic to the next, as someone is on your page. If you have a graphics animation program, you can do this yourself.
Tips are the most versatile and useful piece of information you can create. Get into the habit of recoding tips each time you think of one and each time you share one with a friend or client. Keep those tips handy!

Recently I challenged you to take advantage of the fact that we’re halfway through the year and this would be a great time to check your performance pulse and see what kind of progress you’re making in achieving the goals you set in January. Since we both agree on the value of goal setting as a key component of achievement, I thought it might be a good idea to remind you how to set – or maybe reset – the goals you want to achieve in 2012.

Since we both agree on the value of goal setting as a key component of achievement, I thought it might be a good idea to remind you how to set – or maybe reset – the goals you want to achieve in 2012.

Here are six goals for your goals:

1. See the goal as a reality: The clearer you can actually visualize your goal, the greater the chances are you’ll achieve it. Begin with the end in mind and actually see what you want to accomplish – as if you already have. Act as if the goal has been accomplished. Experience the emotions of successfully completing an important task or project. Olympic athletes do this as part of their practice routines. So can you!

2. Identify the Obstacles: You know there are going to be obstacles and difficulties in achieving your goal, so deal with them up front. Obstacles can be people, locations, systems, structures or money. What’s important is to intellectually acknowledge they exist – or will appear – and plan on facing them head-on.

3. See the benefits: You’ve created a vision for what you want to accomplish, you have your strategies in place, you’ve identified obstacles you’ll need to overcome; now it’s time to see the benefits of achieving your goal(s). Write those benefits down – right beside the goal itself. Seeing the benefits – right beside the goal – becomes a real motivator for goal attainment.

4. Commit to a plan of action: Remember, achievement is about doing – not dreaming. Break your goal down into action items. Big, important goals take time and action to accomplish. Here’s the big question you want to be able to answer: “What can I do today to help accomplish this specific goal?”

5. Be flexible: Things change. Expect the unexpected. You know that no matter how meticulously you plan – stuff happens. When it does, get back on track as soon as possible and stay focused on the finish line.

6. Enjoy the ride: Moving from activity to achievement is a journey, not a race. Our current realities didn’t happen overnight and we aren’t going to make those necessary changes overnight either. Enjoy the ups and downs of achievement. Accept the obstacles to achievement as character builders and just keep moving toward those 2012 goals.

Leadership is not for everyone. It takes a combination of hard work, training, learning, commitment, attitude, integrity and vision to become a truly great and effective leader. However, if we needed to sum up the prerequisites for true leadership succinctly, it would come down to the 3 L’s. True leaders must first learn, then listen, and then actually lead.

1. Leadership all begins with professional and comprehensive training. When this is both done correctly, and the individual also pays attention and takes to heart the essential concepts that he is taught, the learning process begins. The difference between training and learning, therefore, is that while training may be either passive or active, true learning is both active and continuous. This requires the individual being trained to adopt a welcoming attitude and a desire to become better, as well as admitting that no one knows it all, and each of us can always improve. As a professional trainer for well over three decades, I have witnessed my share of both the receptive learner, as well as the ones that go to training solely because either they have to (it’s mandated), they falsely believe that training alone will magically teach them to be great leaders, or they take the training in order to be politically correct and be able to say that they were trained. Obviously, the greatest leaders are those that use what is taught in the training, and learn how to be better leaders. This is further complicated by the fact that the majority of organizations do not conduct professionally designed and/ or coordinated/ led leadership training, so the quality of the training is often, at best, suspect.

2. Great leaders must hone their listening skills, and become truly effective listeners. There is a major difference between passive hearing, listening and effective listening. The effective listener always learns the most accurate information about the needs and wants of those around him, as well as their candid opinions. An essential component of effective listening is the ability to conversationally ask the right probing questions, never interrupt, and ask for clarifications. Effective listeners do not make instant judgments about what people mean, but rather probe deeper to be certain they understand.

3. Although learning and listening are prerequisites to true leadership, one cannot be considered a real leader unless he actually leads. That means that leaders take their wisdom, experience and expertise, combine it with effectively listening to be certain they fully understand the situation, adversity or potential challenges, and then taking directed and timely action.

If you want to be a leader, begin with commitment to learning, follow that with learning how to effectively listen, and then, finally, lead by example and by taking timely and meaningful action.

The answer lies within you.
