How to Make New Year Resolutions That Work
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gary_Ryan_Blair]Gary Ryan Blair

The most important investments require time. Setting and achieving a resolution requires focus, effort, and commitment. Changing old habits and developing new ones won’t happen overnight. The following four guidelines are meant to help you achieve all of your New Years Resolutions:

1. Focus on one resolution at a time: Divide and conquer the activities to achieve your desired results. Break larger tasks into smaller ones – each of these make up your Personal Resolution Road map, a path to achieve your goal.

2. Create a sense of accountability: Designate a friend, mentor, or companion for sharing successes, monitoring progress, and offering support. The benefit of involving others in your goals and plans is instant access to experience, knowledge, and wisdom-it also raises the bar of responsibility.

Research indicates that one of the qualities of those who are successful at making changes is that they have excellent support systems. Many of those who make resolutions never tell others about them. Consciously or subconsciously, that way if they fail no one will view them as a failure.

Communicating your resolution and intentions actually increases your accountability to the behavior. From the very beginning it is important to share your objectives and goals with those around you so that you can enlist their support. Knowing that you are accountable to someone other than yourself will help to keep you on track.

3. Persist until completed: A resolution achieved is a stunning example of consistency and hard work. If you fall behind schedule or are sidetracked for any reason, refocus! Just don’t give up! Don’t surrender to temptation, difficulty or temporary failure. Persist until you achieve the goal.

4. Cultivate personal integrity: Integrity gives you the oxygen needed to cross the finish line of accomplishment. Your commitment determines your level of success. This commitment boils down to two essential tactics: daily action and review.

Resolution Beginnings

The nuts and bolts of achieving any resolution are invariably the same. Neither the size of the resolutions nor the person achieving it matters. Successful New Year’s Resolutions consist of the following:

Clear Purpose – For a dream to become a goal, it must be specific. Being thin is an image, losing 10 pounds by March 1 is a true resolution. Be clear on what you want to achieve.

Make a New Years Resolution that you have a real, bona fide intention of keeping. The truth is most people have not made a genuine, serious, no-kidding around- I-really-mean-to-do-this New Years Resolution!

In Writing – Describe precisely what you want, how you will earn it, when you will have it, and the benefits you’ll receive from achieving your resolution. Write the details, but don’t make it complex. When you put it in writing, you increase your chances of moving to the next step and increasing your level of commitment.

Your mind, while blessed with permanent memory, is cursed with lousy recall. Writing your resolution goes a long way towards achieving it.

Commitment – Without commitment, you can say, “Farewell dream. Adios potential. Toodleloo success. Hello Mediocrity!” Your resolution will find a more deserving soul: someone with courage, character, conviction… commitment.

Commitment is not only habitual but also essential – it moves you ever closer to your resolution and ultimate success. Commitment is the heartbeat of your goal.

Accountability Counts – commitment means you own it. You are responsible for taking the resolution that’s on paper and turning it into a desired outcome. Owning it means tasking responsibility for changes, risks, failures, and successes.

Creating Your Resolution List

Write down your list of New Year’s Resolutions. Get them all out of your head and down on paper.

Focus, Focus, Focus!

Does one resolution stand out? One that you are ready to go after. Focus on this one; you can replicate the process later.

My #1 Resolution is:

Resolution Validation

Next, validate your chosen resolution’s importance. For each question below, ask yourself if you’re getting a green – go, yellow – caution, or red – stop signal.

If a caution or stop signal pops into your head, stop to ask why. It might mean that this resolution isn’t the right one to be focusing on. The validation test will keep you motivated as you continue on your resolution road trip.

If the validation questions show you that this is the wrong resolution for now, start over. Return to your original list, and work through the process once again. It is wiser to focus on the right resolution than to start one you’re not committed to.

Write down what comes to mind as you read through each question. These notes will serve as a motivational tool for you when you are in the middle of your resolution plan.

Is This Resolution Part of My Personal Mission?

Does this resolution align with my mission? How?

_____________________________________________________

How does this resolution align with my values?

_____________________________________________________

How will this resolution bring me closer to living my mission?

_____________________________________________________

Is This Resolution Really Me?

_____________________________________________________

Is this resolution authentic?

_____________________________________________________

Can I envision myself accomplishing this goal?

_____________________________________________________

Is it a habit that I can incorporate into my life?

_____________________________________________________

Am I The Owner of This Resolution?

_____________________________________________________

Is this MY goal?

_____________________________________________________

How can I take complete ownership of this resolution?

_____________________________________________________

Is This Resolution In My Control?

_____________________________________________________

Is this a resolution I can actually achieve?

_____________________________________________________

Is it within my control or someone else’s?

_____________________________________________________

What do I control about this resolution?

_____________________________________________________

What do I not control?

_____________________________________________________

How Will This Resolution Stretch Me?

_____________________________________________________

Is this a resolution that will make me grow?

How will it help me learn new things?

By investing your efforts in these guidelines that lead to successful resolutions, you give yourself a launch pad for starting your new year and your new life.

I wish for you a New Year of health, wealth, and happiness. I encourage you to pursue your resolutions with open arms and to believe deeply in your ability to enjoy the rewards of resolutions and dreams achieved.

In view of the recent blizzard that struck the eastern seaboard it appears that a few precautions and safety tips are in order. While I was safety nestled in my home and did not have to needlessly venture out into the foul weather many people are not as fortunate and must travel to work or other destinations.

It is important for your safety and that of your passengers for you to know what to do in the event you are caught traveling in blizzard like conditions. You might claim that you have traveled the same highway hundreds of times and that you know every one of the twists and turns that you might encounter so what could possibly go wrong?

When that white snow starts to hit the surfaces of the highway and roads things do not appear the same as they did prior to it’s arrived. It is very easy to become confused and disorientated with all the white appearing in front of your eyes. Edges of the highway become increasingly more difficult to define as the amount of downfall increases.

Without failure every winter when the ice and snow arrives we hear accounts of drivers being stranded for days on end without even the vital products necessary to sustain life such as food and water. These very same people failed to bring a cell phone with them as they traveled the snow covered roads and their supplies lacked items such as blankets and cold weather clothing. Although some of these people were fortunate enough to survive long enough for help to arrive others did not survive at all.

It is always a struggle surviving adverse conditions regardless of how well prepared you may be but if you have failed to make even the most basic preparations you are doomed from the start. Everyone should create and carry a winter survival kit in their vehicle at the start of the winter season. Most winter survival kits should be placed in the back seat and not the trunk and should contain the following items.

A warm blanket will help you to keep warm while you are awaiting the arrival of help. Cars often cool off very quickly and due to adequate safety concerns you should not run your car engine for extended periods of time. Carry this blanket in your back seat as in many cases you simply may not be able to access your truck. If you are like me entrance to your trunk can be obtained by way of lowering the back seat itself.

Add extra clothing such as boots, insulated underwear, wool socks, a pair of mittens and a ski mask. Include a source of heat in your kit such as a small candle. Use caution when burning the candle and make sure to include some sort of container to hold it in. I find a clean empty tuna can works well. Naturally, you will need a means of lighting the candle as well. I keep both matches and several lighters in the car.

Although I do not push the concept of eating snow due to the high bacteria content as well as its ability to lower your body temperature you will need to stay hydrated so you may have no choice. Therefore you should include some sort of metal container for melting the ice for drinking. A small camping kit similar to those mess kits from your scouting or military days which fold up to just about nothing works great for this task.

Although you may have a radio in your vehicle you might also include a battery operated portable with extra dry cells. If for some reason you can not use your car radio at least you can keep track of the current weather conditions. The modern trend these days is to keep a wind up radio/flashlight combination in your car.

Your foods should include easy to eat treats such as candy bars, dehydrated fruit, hard candy, jerky, nuts, some jellybeans or raisins. Include a book to help pass the time as you wait to be rescued. Some bright colored cloths such as red or orange along with a whistle can help you attract attention and summons help. Above all, include a fully charged cell phone. I always keep a battery type charger for mine in my vehicle which plugs into the cigarette lighter. That is one of those items that I “wouldn’t leave home without”. Many people forget one of the most vital products you can – a roll or two of toilet paper.

Always stay in your car and never venture from it. It is very easy to become disorientated if you attempt to wander out to find help. For as long as you can, use your car in order to stay warm by periodically running the motor and heater for ten minutes every hour. You will need to conserve your fuel and always ensure that your exhaust pipe is clear of snow or ice.

Should You Invest In Your Health? Yes

Should You Invest In Your Health? Yes
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dee_Power]Dee Power

You invest in your home, car, mutual funds and savings account. You sock away money for a rainy day and tuck away cash for gifts and vacations. Now it’s time to start thinking about investing in your health. You don’t have to spend a fortune to keep your health up to par. You will have to spend some time thinking about what you’re doing and, perhaps, making some lifestyle changes.

Obtain health insurance. You may be young and healthy but accidents do happen. You may qualify for a group health insurance policy at work, if so sign up. Some companies don’t offer health insurance; if that’s the case obtain a major medical policy on your own. The deductible will be high as much as $10,000, but it will cover catastrophic diseases or accidents.

Exercise, pure and simple, exercise 30 minutes a day, everyday. A gym membership is one way to convince yourself you need to exercise. Choose one that’s either nearby your work or your home. Invest in exercise equipment such as a stationary bicycle, a set of free weights and perhaps an exercise CD or two. Make it fun and do the exercise session together. Who knows what might happen when you’re both all hot and sweaty.

Eat Right. If you’re a fast food junkie, break the habit. Your local hamburger joint should be called The House of Salt and Fat. One burger, never mind the fries, contains your daily allowance of sodium and is loaded with fat. Invest in an app for your smart phone that tells you the ingredients and nutritional content of popular restaurants.

Learn how to cook. It’s another activity that’s fun to do together. Invest in a beginner cookbook, a set of sturdy pots and pans and a sense of humor. While you’ll spend more on groceries, you’ll probably save even more because you’re not eating out. If grocery shop is a pain, invest in home delivery. You fill out your list online and it’s delivered to your door.

Reduce stress. Stress can lead to heart disease. You might think you’re too young to be worried about heart disease, but think again. It takes time for stress to impact your health. The sooner you start on a stress reduction program, the sooner you’ll reap the rewards. Invest in yourself. Set up yoga classes. Sign up for dance lessons. Pick up a hobby you used to love but think you don’t have time for now.

Have A Great Day

Getting your day off on the right foot seems impossible sometimes. You have high hopes for a good day and then 10 minutes after getting to work something goes wrong. Most of the time this “event” can be the beginning of a real bad day.

What if you knew that everyone was cheering for you? What if you knew that everyone “had your back?” Would that make a difference in your perception of this early in the day bad event?

I was recently reminded of the importance of people needing to feel like others want them to succeed as opposed to others just waiting around for them to fail. The reminder came from my 4 year old daughter. When I drop my kids off at school in the morning, I always tell them… “Have a great day!” I never really thought that much about it or realized that it had any impact on their day, until one morning last week. As I was leaving early for work, my 4 year old daughter stopped me at the door looked me in the eye and said, “Have a great day daddy!” As you can imagine, I did have a great day. It has been over a week now and I am still replaying that morning in my mind. I am not sure that I have had a bad day since.

So how does this relate to you and your people? Simple. Do your employees feel like you want them to have a great day or Do they feel that you are just waiting around for them to fail? This is a tough question that you may not want to answer. Most of us don’t want to see our people fail, but we are constantly watching to make sure they aren’t doing anything wrong. Most employees feel like someone is constantly looking over their shoulder just waiting for them to make a mistake.

You want your people to succeed, don’t you? If so then they need to know it, they need to feel it, they need to see it and they need to HEAR it. You need to show them every way possible that you are hoping that they have a great day and that you are willing to do what you can to make that happen.

Think about the worst job you have ever had in your life. Are you picturing it now? Think about this for a minute, was it the work or the people that made the job bad. Most of the time it is the people. You likely felt under-appreciated, over-worked, micromanaged or all of these. So you left. Your people are having the same thoughts. That is unless you are genuinely are showing them that you want them to “Have a Great Day!”

This week find a way to put into motion the necessary pieces to make sure that your employees feel like you want them to succeed. I think that you will realize that the “extra” effort you wanted from them was just a “Great Day” away.
